Await Further Instruction Review (2018)

Await Further Instruction is not perfect, but it is original British sci-fi horror you might want to check it out.

The Story

It’s Christmas Day and very dysfunctional family wake to find a mysterious black substance surrounding their house. Something monumental is clearly happening right outside their door, but what exactly. Descending into terrified arguments, they turn on the television, desperate for any information. On screen a message glows ominously: ‘Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions’.

The Review (Spoiler Free)

Await Further Instruction is a low budget sci-fi horror from Britain.  But it has very good production value.  It has pretty good music, very good acting, good cinematography, and it has interesting and original story.

Await Further Instruction plays out like one of long episode of Twilight Zone.  A family finds themselves trapped in their own home on Christmas day.  We don’t know who and what is doing this to the family.  We see the family slowly falls apart as the the movie slowly reveals its mystery black substance that surrounds the house.

The movie spends some time developing each character.  Every character is a stereotype of themselves: the detestable old creep grandfather; the mentally unhinged father; the weak and whiny mother; the dumb jock brother-in-law; the whiny and entitled pregnant sister; the “good” brother who’s trying too hard to do the right thing; the East Indian girlfriend who thinks that everybody is a racist. So we see that when trouble hits, the family falls apart very quickly and became deadly.

Unfortunately, the mystery of this black substance surrounding the house is left ambiguous.  The movie makes attempt to reveal its mystery, but not enough to be satisfied.  The movie doesn’t even make any attempt to explain where this mysterious substance came from or what does it wants from the family.  Just “here’s your monster; deal with it”.

But at the end, the movie isn’t really about this mysterious subsistence, but about a dysfunctional family who are trying to cop with this life threatening situation as the the father of the family who is trying to take control over his family.

The last 30 minuets of the movie does get very suspenseful and intense. Even though we don’t know too much about this black subsistence surrounding the house, we know enough get our attention until the end of the movie.

In the Nutshell

Await Further Instruction is not perfect but it is original British sci-fi thriller you might want to check it out. [ 4 out of 5 stars.]
