The Review (Spoiler Free)

I felt like I got deceived.  Just like many people, I walked into the movie not knowing anything about the movie except for the short trailer.  By looking at the trailer, it looks like some kind of monster movie, perhaps zombie, or some kind of twisted horror movie. But there are no monsters or zombies. It’s not even consider horror film.  About 30 minutes into the movie, I started to realize there is nothing is coming out at night.  It Comes At Night is best categorize as a psychological thriller.

But if you look at the movie as a psychological thriller, it is very good movie.  It is slow burner, but the story has so much mystery, it didn’t bother me at all.  And last 30 minutes of the movie is very intense.

Lots of people are complaining about how the movie is very ambiguous and left so many thing unanswered.  That is true. The movie is very ambiguous.  But I believe the director left the movie purposely for you to come up with your own conclusion.  If you are looking for movie that will explains everything, this movie isn’t for you.  I believe the detail of what really happened isn’t important to direct.  What director what you to focus on reaction of each characters and their decision making.

But in this post, I’ll make an attempt to explain the ending.

Ending of the movie is also very ambiguous and it just abruptly ends. I can see how some people might not like the ending, but as for me, it didn’t bother me at all.  Even though the movie didn’t spell it out what happened at the end, it is pretty obvious what was going on at the end.

The movie is driven by amazing acting.  All the actors are fabulous.

Spoiler Ending (Spoiler Alert)

As I discuss before, It Comes At Night is psychological thriller.  There is nothing comes at night.  Many of the creepy scary scenes in the trailer are from dream sequence.  The movies is about trust.  It is about two families living together in the same house who must trust each other to survive from deadly disease that has taken over the world.  As the movie progress, the trust between two families slowly fade away.

The problem intensify when Travis, 17 year old son of Paul, who woke up middle of the night and found Andrew, son of Will, sleeping in dead grandpa’s room.  So he took him back to room where he supposed to be.  Then he found the red door unlocked which supposed to be locked every night. Not only that he found his missing dog inside the house and the dog is badly injured and infected.

The unanswered questions are how did the dog arrive at the house, and who opened the red door and door that is behind it?

At the end, trust between two families completely breaks.  Eventually Paul and his wife killed the Will’s family.  We don’t know for sure why Will decided to leave.  Most likely because his little son was infected with virus.  Since Andrew and Travis is very close, we know that if Andrew is infected, Travis is also infected.

At the end, we find out Travis is infected with virus.  The ending scene is where Paul and Paul’s’ wife sitting in a table alone staring at each other and realized that they all going to die.

So going back to the question, how did the dog arrive at the house and who opened the red door and door that is behind it?  I am pretty sure little Andrew didn’t do it.  Even though he seems to sleep walk at night, he is too small to reach the lock.  So we are left with Travis.

Travis seems to be central figure in the story because we see many of his dreams. One of his, so called dream, we see him going outside looking for his dog. When his dog ran away in the woods, he took it very hard.  Most likely, he went outside one night look for his dog without telling the family.  When he found the dog, and brought him to the house, and forget to lock the door behind him. And the rest of the film, he lied to his family to cover up his track. This explains how he felt so guilty when Will’s family died.

Another scenario is that Travis also sleep walk at night.  He sleepwalks outside the house to look for his dog, found him, and brought him back to the house, and forget to lock the door behind it.  So in actually, he can’t remember what had happen.

We learned that Paul and Paul’s wife is only person who has key to the door but I believe key is to unlock the door from outside. Anyone can unlocked the door from inside.  That is how Travis is able to unlocked the door and go outside.

If this is true, the iron of the movie is very clever.  Travis is responsible for killing Will’s family and eventually both families. We end up finding out that Will’s family is a good family and they just want to survive just like Paul’s family.

In the Nutshell

Don’t be deceived, It Comes At Night is not what you think it is.  But if you look at the movie as it is, it is very good movie. I give 4 out of 5 stars.
