Creep 2 (2017) Horror Movie Review with Ending Explained

The Review (Spoiler Free)

“Creep 2” stands as a formidable sequel that not only meets the chilling atmosphere of its predecessor, “Creep 1” but also enhances it with a blend of dark humor and awkward tension. The film, directed by Patrick Brice and starring Mark Duplass and Desiree Akhavan, delves deeper into the twisted psyche of its antagonist, providing a narrative that is both unsettling and intriguing.

The movie picks up where the original left off, with Duplass reprising his role as the eerie and enigmatic “Josef,” who now goes by “Aaron.” His performance is both captivating and disturbing, drawing the audience into a complex relationship with Akhavan’s character, Sara, a hopeful YouTube star who becomes entangled in Aaron’s bizarre world. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, creating a dynamic that is worth exploring in repeated viewings.

Critics have praised the film for its ability to maintain the suspense and creepiness of the original while introducing new elements that keep the sequel fresh. The film’s low-budget, experimental feel contributes to its charm, giving it an authenticity that resonates with fans of the horror genre. The narrative takes unexpected turns, avoiding clichés and delivering a story that is both original and engaging.

“Creep 2” has been lauded for its exploration of the characters’ relationship, which some critics have compared to the classic dynamic between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. The film’s success lies in its commitment to character development and its willingness to push boundaries, resulting in a sequel that is both a worthy continuation and a standalone triumph.

Spoiler Ending (Spoiler Alert!)

The first noticeable change in “Creep 2” is Mark Duplass’ character’s name shift from Josef to Aaron, which was the name of his previous victim in the original “Creep.” Throughout the film, there are numerous references to Aaron, suggesting that he had a significant impact on his life and remains in his thoughts.

Henceforth, I will refer to Mark Duplass’ character as Aaron.

In “Creep 2,” Aaron seems to be experiencing a midlife crisis. Having turned 40, he believes he has lost his edge. Consequently, he embarks on making a documentary about his life as a serial killer, with plans to end his own life after the film’s completion, or so he tells Sara.

Aaron spends the movie persuading Sara to be truthful, claiming he reciprocates honesty. However, it is later revealed that Aaron’s stories are fabrications; he is a pathological liar, and even his name is false. His true identity remains unknown, and Sara is merely one of many victims.

The film delves into Aaron’s backstory as a serial killer, though it’s unclear whether his accounts are factual. Nonetheless, they are deeply disturbing and captivating. In the film’s climax, Aaron attempts to recreate a traumatic childhood event with Sara.

Aaron’s intention was always to murder Sara. To achieve this, he stabs himself non-fatally, demonstrating his deranged nature. In the end, he manages to wound Sara and drags her to an open grave. However, Sara survives and retaliates, seemingly killing Aaron. Ultimately, Aaron’s attempt to kill her fails, possibly indicating a loss of his ‘mojo.’

The final scene shows Sara on a train, returning home after some time has passed. It seems someone is trailing and filming her from afar. The implication is that Aaron may have survived and is now stalking her, leaving his intentions uncertain.

In the Nutshell

“Creep 2” is a must-watch for those who appreciate a psychological thriller that defies expectations. It is a testament to the talents of its creators and actors, and a reminder that sequels can indeed surpass their origins when executed with care and creativity. The film is available for streaming and has garnered a positive reception from both critics and audiences alike, securing its place as a standout entry in the horror genre. I give 4 out of 5 stars.

  1. Both Creep and Creep 2 were impossible to look away from. They are such (for lack of a better word) creepy movies. I can’t wait for Creep 3!

    1. Speaking of impossible to look away, you heard of Netflix TV show called Black Mirror? That show is so cool and interesting, it’s impossible to look away. Its not horror but more of Twilightzone type of show with sci-fi elements to it.

  2. I absolutely loved both films. After i was recommended the first film from an article titled “hidden gems on netflix” i qued it and finally watched it tonite. I was blown away by how awesome the first one was and quickly went online to see if there was a sequel. To my surprise i discovered the second one was released last year and also available on netflix so i watched it immediately. The two films are respectively very different from one another, but are both great in their own ways. This time around, creep 2 played with elements presented in the first film cleverly and Mark Duplass does a sensational job playing the main antagonist with an even darker tone. I am excited for the third installment, as i read online that “creep” was created to be a trilogy from the get go. The ambiguous ending to the second film is the perfect set up for the next installment, leaving us with a bunch of questions. I hope these films spark a huge cult following which will lead to great anticipation for what comes next. I hope the cult following is large enough to generate a wide theatrical release to give this franchise the recognition it deserves via box office ticket sales which i believe with the minimal budget the first films took would make the creep finale a bonafied hit! In conclusion “creep 2” in my opinion doesnt surpass the quality of the first film like most reviewers claim as i think both films stand on their own as equally fantastic because they can stand on their own as perfect compliments to each other and the ultimate plot these films interpret which is how trust and judgement of character can lead to an impending doom.
