Cult of Chucky (2017) Horror Movie Review

“Cult of Chucky,” the seventh installment in the long-running “Child’s Play” franchise, directed and written by Don Mancini, marks a return to the series’ horror roots with a modern twist. The film brings back the notorious killer doll, Chucky, voiced by Brad Dourif, to terrorize his human victim, Nica, played by Fiona Dourif, who is confined to an asylum for the criminally insane.

The movie cleverly intertwines the series’ lore, bringing back characters such as Tiffany, portrayed by Jennifer Tilly, and Andy Barclay, played by Alex Vincent, creating a sense of nostalgia for fans of the franchise. The setting of the mental institution adds a claustrophobic atmosphere that heightens the tension and horror.

One of the film’s strengths is its self-awareness. It doesn’t shy away from embracing the absurdity of its premise, balancing the fine line between horror and dark comedy. The humor is well-placed and serves as a breather between the intense and creatively gruesome kill scenes that the series is known for.

Critics have noted that “Cult of Chucky” manages to be both a self-spoofing slasher and a lowbrow bloodbath, all while being a guilty pleasure. The film has been praised for its use of practical effects and animatronics over CGI, giving Chucky a more tangible and menacing presence on screen.

However, the film is not without its flaws. Some reviewers have pointed out plot holes and a third act that seems to unravel. Despite this, the film has been received positively by many fans and critics alike, with a Rotten Tomatoes score that reflects an appreciation for the film’s fresh take on the killer doll narrative.

In the Nutshell

“Cult of Chucky” is a film that will satisfy fans of the franchise and horror enthusiasts. It’s a testament to the series’ ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its roots. With strong performances, especially from Fiona Dourif, and a willingness to push boundaries, “Cult of Chucky” stands as a solid entry in the “Child’s Play” saga. Whether you’re in it for the nostalgia, the horror, or the dark humor, “Cult of Chucky” is a ride worth taking. I give 3 out of 5 stars.
