Farm House (2008) Review and Ending Explained

Farmhouse is hidden gem that most horror fans have missed. I highly recommend the movie.

The Story

Farm House is a torture horror set in the modern day mid-west. We follow a young couple as they leave their troubled past behind and head out to start over.  After becoming stranded in an isolated Wine Vineyard in the middle of nowhere, the young couple is forced to face the secrets they’re running from, all the while trying to escape the malicious intent of the Vineyard mysterious inhabitants.

The Review (Spoiler Free)

Farm House started out as pretty typical torture horror film.  A couple’s car broke down in the middle of nowhere and they seek help from near by farm house.  But the folks in the farm house aren’t there to help them.  The movie takes surprise turn towards the end.

Farm House is very entertaining in many different levels.  First of all, it is very good horror.  The movie is very creepy, intense, and dark without the cheap jump scares.  There aren’t too much gore but there are enough torture scenes which make you very uncomfortable.  The surprised twist in the story is also very unpredictable and unexpected.  To top it off, the slow reveal of the couple’s dark past is very unexpected and takes the film over the top.

Obviously, Farm House is low-budget film, but don’t let that fool you.  It is well done.  The pace of the movie is good and the acting is very good.  There are some familiar faces such as  Steven Weber, and Kelly Hu star in the movie . Although the husband character named Chad, played by William Lee Scott, is very annoying and frustrating.  You just want to punch him in the face.  What makes the movie very interesting is the couple’s troubled past.  Throughout the movie, we get to see little glimpse of their past.  These flash back throughout the movie is well done, and the movie wraps up very well at the end without any unanswered question nor any kind of confusion.

Ending Explained (Spoiler Warning!)

There are two big surprises at the ending of the movie.  First surprise is the fact that the married couples are both dead.  After the car crash, they both have died and theirs souls are trapped in some kind of afterlife.  I know this is a bit of cliche surprise, but it is effective because the movie set up as some kind of slasher torture horror but it take surprise turn into supernatural horror at the end.

The movie does good job not revealing the surprise until the end.  The first hint of surprise twist in the story is when the couple finally were able to escape the farm house.  But they are unable to drive away as they somehow ended up coming back to the farm house.   This is when you started to sense that there is some kind of supernatural elements to the story.

The second surprise is revealed when they are faced with the devil himself.  We are told why the couple are being punished.  Throughout the movie, we saw the flashback of the couple who are struggling with handicapped baby.  What we didn’t know was that the mother finally decided to murdered the baby by drowning, and the husband watched and didn’t intervene.  This was the reason why they are being judged and tormented in hell.

At the end, the movies takes you to the beginning of the movie where young Scarlet was in her father’s funeral.  There we learned that her father was abusing her and that her mother murdered him to end his abuse.  The devil told her that he knows her father well which tells us that her father also went to hell after his death.  There we are learned that the devil himself was with her from the beginning when Scarlet was young and influencing her throughout her life.  It was as if the devil already predestined her to be in hell with her father in the future.  At the end, Scarlet asked the devil for second chance.  That’s when the devil told her, it wouldn’t make any difference because she is predestined to be in hell.  This is very interesting final twist in the story.

At the end, Farm House is not a torture horror film but movie about hell and the afterlife.  It deals with serious theme of consequences of actions, morality and judgement.

In the Nutshell

Farm House started out as a typical torture horror but it’s far from it.  So sit back and watch the whole movie.  Farm House is hidden gem that many horror fans have missed.  I give 5 out of 5 stars.
