The movie is replete with biblical allusions, though they are not entirely accurate, they do contribute to its intrigue.
It’s evident that the husband symbolizes God and the wife represents Mother Nature, which aligns with the film’s title. The narrative unfolds from Mother Nature’s viewpoint, who adores God but grows increasingly frustrated by his greater affection for mankind. She shares a deep bond with the house, which seems to symbolize Earth or nature itself.
The biblical references become apparent with the introduction of the first guest, portrayed by Ed Harris, who represents Adam, the first man. His wife is clearly meant to be Eve. We observe God’s profound love for Adam, and Adam’s respect for God. A scar on Adam’s rib, seen when he vomits, alludes to the biblical creation of Eve from Adam’s rib.
The animosity between Adam’s sons, Cain and Abel, is palpable, culminating in Cain murdering Abel and fleeing into the woods.
Eve, while loving Adam, is portrayed as sly and deceptive. God’s office is akin to the forbidden tree, and despite warnings, Eve enters and shatters God’s cherished stone, mirroring the biblical tale of Adam and Eve’s transgression with the forbidden fruit. Subsequently, God expels them from the house, reminiscent of their banishment from Eden.
Adam and his extensive kin soon force their way back into the house, wreaking havoc and eventually causing a flood by breaking a pipe, which God uses to expel them once more, symbolizing the biblical flood.
When God completes his new poetry, representing the New Testament, a celebration ensues, with people once again invading the house in adoration of his work.
The birth of the Mother’s son, who signifies Jesus, is a bit perplexing in terms of Mother Nature’s role, but as previously mentioned, the film does not aim for a precise biblical retelling.
