Crimson Peak (2015) Movie Review

Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” is a visually stunning and narratively rich film that harks back to the classic gothic romances of yesteryear. The movie, set in the early 20th century, tells the story of Edith Cushing, an aspiring author who falls in love with the mysterious Sir Thomas Sharpe. However, as she moves into his ancestral home, she finds herself surrounded by secrets that will change her life forever.

The film opens with a strong, character-driven narrative that establishes Edith as a strong-willed and intelligent protagonist. Mia Wasikowska portrays Edith with a nuanced performance that captures the character’s determination and vulnerability. Tom Hiddleston’s Sir Thomas Sharpe is equally compelling, offering a complex character whose motivations are shrouded in mystery.

Jessica Chastain delivers a standout performance as Lucille Sharpe, Thomas’ sister, whose chilling presence adds a layer of intrigue to the story. The dynamic between the siblings is one of the film’s highlights, as it slowly unravels to reveal the dark history of the Sharpe family.

Del Toro’s direction is masterful, blending elements of horror, romance, and drama to create a cohesive and immersive world. The real star of the film, however, is the production design. Allerdale Hall, the Sharpe family estate, is a character in its own right. The decaying mansion, with its labyrinthine corridors and ghostly apparitions, provides a perfect backdrop for the film’s haunting atmosphere.

The use of practical effects and minimal CGI lends an authenticity to the film’s supernatural elements, making the ghosts that haunt the halls of Allerdale feel all the more real and terrifying. The film’s color palette is rich and vibrant, with the crimson of the clay mines seeping into every frame, symbolizing the blood and passion that run through the narrative.

“Crimson Peak” is not without its flaws. Some critics have pointed out the film’s predictability and the lack of depth in certain characters. However, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a beautifully crafted piece of cinema. Del Toro has created a film that is not only a feast for the eyes but also a thought-provoking exploration of love, loss, and the ghosts of our pasts.

In the Nutshell

“Crimson Peak” is a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen. It is a testament to Guillermo del Toro’s vision and his ability to craft a story that is both visually arresting and emotionally resonant. Whether you’re a fan of gothic romance, horror, or just great storytelling, “Crimson Peak” is a film that will linger with you long after the credits roll.
