Last Shift (2015) Horror Movie Review

“Last Shift,” directed by Anthony DiBlasi, is a horror film that masterfully intertwines the psychological with the supernatural. The movie follows Jessica Loren, portrayed by Juliana Harkavy, a rookie police officer assigned to the last shift at a closing police station. What begins as a seemingly mundane night quickly descends into a terrifying ordeal that blurs the lines between reality and nightmare.

The film is lauded for its intense atmosphere and clever use of a single location to evoke a sense of claustrophobia and dread. DiBlasi’s direction ensures that the tension is palpable, with a slow burn that builds to a crescendo of fear. The use of practical effects and sound design adds to the authenticity of the horror, making “Last Shift” a standout in its genre.

Critics have praised the film for its disturbing imagery and jump scares that are both effective and rewarding. Despite some unanswered questions and reliance on genre cliches, the film manages to be more than just an average horror flick. It surprises and exceeds expectations, leaving viewers with a lingering sense of unease.

Juliana Harkavy delivers a compelling performance, carrying the film almost single-handedly through her character’s harrowing journey. The storyline is twisted and intense, with elements that cater to fans of both psychological thrillers and ghost stories. The ambiguity of whether the horrors Loren faces are ghostly vengeance or a breakdown of her psyche adds a layer of complexity to the narrative.

“Last Shift” is a testament to the horror genre’s ability to evolve and maintain relevance. It’s a film that could have been regarded as a classic had it been released decades earlier. For modern audiences, it serves as a reminder that horror is not just about the shock value but also about creating a lasting impression that haunts you long after the credits roll.

In the Nutshell

“Last Shift” is a solid horror film that effectively utilizes its setting and limited cast to deliver a savagely atmospheric and psychologically disturbing experience. It’s a must-watch for horror enthusiasts looking for a film that respects the genre’s roots while delivering a fresh and haunting experience. I give 5 out of 5 stars.

  1. I watched this movie after seeing it was on your recommendations list and I’m so glad I did! Totally a hidden gem scary movie. I kept passing it on Netflix, because the cover made it look like a low budget film, which it is not. I jumped so many times and the suspense was well done. Also, the story is legit intriguing and the quality of production is great. Thanks for the rec!

      1. I saw Blackcoat’s Daughter recently. It was well done and creepy! It left me feeling uneasy since she got away and continued being horrible. Have you seen The Vault with James Franco? I just watched it on Netflix. It’s a tad slow in the beginning but intriguing. The second half is when things start getting crazy.
