Rings (2017) Horror Movie Review

“Rings,” the 2017 addition to the “Ring” franchise, attempts to breathe new life into the eerie saga of Samara and her cursed videotape. Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez, the film introduces a fresh set of characters who find themselves ensnared in the chilling curse.

The narrative follows Julia (Matilda Lutz) as she becomes increasingly concerned about her boyfriend Holt (Alex Roe), who has delved into a dark subculture surrounding the infamous videotape that kills its viewer seven days after watching. In a desperate attempt to save Holt, Julia watches the tape, only to uncover a movie within the movie that no one has seen before.

Critics have had mixed feelings about “Rings.” Some appreciate the attempt to revitalize the franchise with new twists and turns, while others feel it falls short of delivering the same level of suspense and horror that the original films did. The consensus seems to be that “Rings” may offer some thrills for die-hard fans but might disappoint those looking for innovation in the horror genre.

The film’s exploration of the mythos behind Samara is a double-edged sword; it provides answers to long-standing questions but also strips away some of the mystery that made her such a terrifying figure. Despite this, “Rings” delivers on some of the franchise’s hallmarks, including chilling scenes and a haunting atmosphere.

In the Nutshell

“Rings” (2017) is a film that will likely divide audiences. It’s a continuation for those who are invested in the lore of the “Ring” series, but it may not stand out to newcomers or those seeking a fresh take on horror. Whether it’s a worthy successor or a missed opportunity, “Rings” is a film that reminds us that some stories continue to echo, long after the tape has ended.  I give 2 out of 5 stars.
