Sadako vs Kayako (Ring vs Grudge) (2016) Horror Movie Review

In the realm of Japanese horror, two names stand out for having defined the genre in the early 2000s: Sadako from “The Ring” and Kayako from “The Grudge”. Their respective curses terrified audiences worldwide, and in 2016, they collided in the crossover event “Sadako vs. Kayako”. Directed by Kôji Shiraishi, this film promised to be a thrilling face-off between two iconic entities of J-Horror.

The premise is as straightforward as it is audacious: a cursed videotape and a haunted house set the stage for a supernatural showdown. The film opens with the familiar cursed video, which continues to be a potent source of dread. Sadako’s part of the narrative is given more weight, especially in the early stages, setting up the tension for what’s to come. As the story progresses, Kayako’s haunting presence is introduced, slowly intertwining with the curse of the videotape.

The characters are a mix of new and familiar, with Yuri and Suzuka leading the charge against the two curses. The inclusion of two enigmatic exorcists adds a fresh dynamic to the story, providing a glimmer of hope against the overwhelming dread. The characters are more memorable than those in recent entries of the franchises, bringing a much-needed vigor to the screen.

However, the film is not without its flaws. Critics have pointed out the sporadic mix of decent thrills and unintentional comedy bursts, which can disrupt the horror atmosphere. Some scenes are criticized for their corniness and choppy progression, potentially undermining the buildup of suspense.

Despite these criticisms, “Sadako vs. Kayako” has been noted for its moments of genuine terror, albeit few. When the film hits its mark, it encapsulates the classic allure of both franchises, even if these moments are brief. It’s a film that, while not perfect, offers a better cast and more compelling horror than the recent separate outings of the two iconic ghosts.

The film has been compared to “Freddy vs. Jason” in its attempt to blend horror with humor. This approach has divided audiences, with some appreciating the levity and others preferring their horror to be unadulterated. The balance between scares and laughs is a delicate one, and “Sadako vs. Kayako” walks this line with varying degrees of success.

In the Nutshell

“Sadako vs. Kayako” is a bold experiment in the J-Horror genre. It brings together two legendary curses in a way that is both entertaining and flawed. For fans of the genre, it’s a must-watch, if only to witness the spectacle of these two titans clashing. It may not be the definitive horror experience, but it’s an intriguing chapter in the legacy of J-Horror. I give 4 out of 5 stars.
