Spiderhole Review (2010)

Spiderhole is British independent horror film.  Spiderhole sets up nicely for some kind of creepy horror but it fails short in many ways.

The Story

A group of art students embark upon a mission to find an empty house in London to stay for free and party.  They have found an abandoned house to stay, but they started to realized that they are not alone in the house. The house appeared to be empty and yet a malevolent force is clearly at work.

The Review (Spoiler Free)

Spiderhole is directed and written by Daniel Simpson.  This is his first film and the films looks great with expensive looking production design and excellent lighting which creates very creepy atmosphere in the confinement of the empty building.

Spiderhole sets up nicely for some kind of a haunted house horror.  Initially, you don’t really know that the movie is about, but quickly, supernatural element is dispensed and the “Saw”-like ‘torture porn’ element begins.

The biggest problem with the movies is the characters.  First of all, these characters are not really likable characters.  So you don’t really care for them and don’t care what happened to them.  Secondly, they acted so stupidly throughout the movie.  For example, they have ample opportunity to get away from the trouble but instead they find themselves caught even deeper in trouble.  Also, when you have opportunity to finish the villain, you make sure he dies.  You don’t just hit him once and then just run away.  I find myself frustrated with the characters many times.  Simply, the movie took all the bad horror cliche from other horror movies and put them all together.

Another problem I had with the movie is the villain.  The movie does reveal little bit of backstory of the villain, but the backstory is pretty weak and it didn’t really make sense.

In the Nutshell

Spiderhole sets up nicely for creepy horror but it ends up being very unoriginal and predictable movie. [2 out of 5 stars]
