Split is latest M. Night’s horror film about split personality. Unlike style of horror film, this film doesn’t have mind blowing ending but it is still very good movie.

The Review (Spoiler Free)

I’m a fan of M. Night.  Split is M. Night’s latest movie. I really enjoyed his previous movie, The Visit.  Just like many of his movie, this movie does has bit of surprise twist in the story, but it isn’t mind blowing twist like many of his previous movies.  But personally, movies doesn’t have to have mind blowing twist to be good.  This movie still very good.

The movie plays with the concept of dissociative identity disorder, aka DID.  Dissociative identity disorder is fancy words for multiple personality.  DID is thought to be a complex psychological condition that is likely caused by many factors, including severe trauma during early childhood (usually extreme, repetitive physical, sexual, or emotional abuse).  The movie plays with the idea that each personality is independent of each other yet, compete with each other. At the same time, when a personality takes over, the host goes through physical changes according to each personality.

We are told that the man has over 23 different types of personality, but we only get to get to know just few personalities. Having all these different personalities aren’t confusing at all. Each character are very different and distinct.  Also they dress differently, so it is easy to tell them apart.

Acting

Acting is great in this movie.  James McAvoy does fantastic job playing all these different characters.  He plays each characters convincingly. We’ve seen Anya Taylor-Joy in many different movies before and as always she does a great job.

Few thoughts about the ending (Spoiler Alert!!)

The big hype about the movie is the final scene in the movie.  This isn’t the surprise twist in the story but a set up for upcoming sequel of the movie.  In the final scene, we see cameo of Bruce Willis.

The final scene goes like this.  The movie ends with McAvoy’s character, who is able to transformed into 24th personality called the Beast.  At the end, he was able to escaped capture by the authorities. The scene switch over to the busy diner as a lady who is watching a TV news about the the McAvoy’s character. The lady says that the news story reminds her of another case, from years ago, involving “a funny guy in a wheelchair, what was his name?”  The camera turns and we see Bruce Willis, wearing a security guard work shirt that says “Dunn,” as he utters while looking up at the TV screen, “Mr. Glass.”

As you remember, Mr. Glass is Sam Jackson’s, superviliain character in the M. Night’s movie, Unbreakable.  It is obvious that Brue Willis is David Dunn character in Unbreakable. This tells us that the movie Split is in tje same universe as Unbreakable.   Also it tells us that there is upcoming movie that involves David Dun, Mr. Glass, McAvoy’s character and, perhaps, Casey.  We will see.
