The First Purge Review (2018)

The First Purge is latest movie from The Purge franchise.

The Story

The First Purge serves as a prequel that recounts events that led up to the first Purge event.  To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. The First Purge mainly focus on character named Mia who is trying to hold the family together during the Purge.

The Review (Spoiler Free)

I really enjoy Purge franchise, but The First Purge is just awful.  First of all, the movie is very boring.  Nothing really happens until middle of the movie.  First half of the movie tries desperately to develop few stereotypical characters who are not that interesting.

But what is so terrible about this movie is the regressive political messages shoved in your face throughout the movie.  There is heavy stereotypical racial message where the rich white is oppressing poor blacks in “the hood.”  Also one of the hero in the movie is the neighborhood drug dealer boss.  Just a movie to feed the racial divide with stereotypes all over the place.  Incredibly disappointing.  The First Purge has finally destroyed The Purge franchise.

In term of story, there are none.  In terms of suspense and action, there were pretty much none.  At the end, you don’t really care what happens to these characters,  The First Purge turned out to be just a bad TV drama.

In the Nutshell

The First Purge has finally destroyed the Purge franchise. Don’t waste your time. [1 out of 5 stars.]
