Veronica is Spanish Netflix horror about Ouija board and demon possession.

The Story

The story is set in Madrid, Spain in 1991. After passing of her father, Verónica find herself taking care of her three young siblings while her mother works all day. Still mourning for her father’s death, Verónica decides to play Ouija board with her friends during total solar eclipse to make contact with her father. Afterwards, she started to noticed strange things are happening around her home.  Soon she fears that these strange forces are a threat to her siblings and she find herself struggling to protect her siblings.

The Review (Spoiler Free)

First thing you noticed about the movie is that it is based on true event.  The movie is based on police report from actual incident.  At the end of the movie, you’ll see supposedly actual photos from the crime scenes.  But these based-on-true-event movies doesn’t make it scarier.  It’s just good for marketing purposes.

Overall, Verónica is just another Ouija board demon possession movie. What is different about the movie is that the movie is from the perspective of teenage who find herself struggling to protect helpless young siblings from strange powerful forces all alone.

The movie is very predictable but it is still entertaining because it is well done.  There are many creepy scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Lead actress played by Sandra Escacena did fabulous job. Even all the kids in the movies are adorable and very lovable.

The movie has surprise ending, but I saw it coming from mile away.  But it is still satisfying ending.

The movie is directed by Paco Plaza who is also responsible for [REC] series. If you haven’t seen [REC] series, I highly recommend them.

In the Nutshell

If you have Netflix, this movie needs to be on your Watch List.  Don’t let the subtitles discourage you.  I give 4 out of 5 stars.
