Await Further Instruction (2018) Horror Movie Review

“Await Further Instructions” is a film that encapsulates the essence of a psychological thriller with a science fiction twist. The movie, directed by Johnny Kevorkian and written by Gavin Williams, takes the audience on a harrowing journey of a family’s Christmas dinner turned nightmare.

The premise is intriguing: the Milgram family, already strained by years of estrangement, finds themselves trapped in their home, surrounded by a mysterious black substance. Their only connection to the outside world is through cryptic and increasingly sinister instructions from their television set. The film taps into the universal fear of isolation and the unknown, while also commenting on the pervasive influence of media on our lives.

The performances are commendable, with David Bradley portraying the family’s racist patriarch with a chilling conviction that sets the tone for the family dynamics. Sam Gittins and Neerja Naik, as Nick and his girlfriend Annji, respectively, deliver strong performances that capture the desperation and helplessness of their situation.

The film’s pacing is deliberate, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere that intensifies the sense of dread. The real-time-style progression and the confined setting contribute to the feeling that the characters—and by extension, the audience—are trapped in an inescapable situation.

However, the film is not without its flaws. Critics have pointed out that the characters sometimes come across as one-dimensional, serving more as ideological foils than as fully fleshed-out individuals. This can detract from the emotional impact of the story, as the audience may find it hard to connect with characters who feel like mere representations of ideas rather than real people.

The ending of “Await Further Instructions” has been a point of contention among viewers. Some find the finale compelling as a cynical morality tale, while others feel it falls flat, leaving too many questions unanswered and failing to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the build-up of tension throughout the film.

In the Nutshell

“Await Further Instructions” is a film that offers a gripping premise and raises thought-provoking questions about society’s reliance on media. While it may not be perfect, it is a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre, providing a blend of familial angst and slithering scares that will likely linger with viewers long after the credits roll.
