15 Cameras” (2023) Horror Movie Review

“15 Cameras,” the third installment in the voyeur-horror franchise that began with “13 Cameras,” follows Cam and Sky, a young couple who purchase a duplex with a dark past. Their new home, once owned by the infamous “slumlord” Gerald (the villain of the previous films), comes with more baggage than they bargained for: a maze of hidden surveillance cameras and a legacy of paranoia.

Plot and Themes: Watching the Watchers

The film quickly establishes its central tension: as Cam discovers the hidden surveillance system, he is drawn into a spiral of voyeurism, initially rationalizing his actions but soon becoming obsessed with watching both his wife and their tenants. Sky, meanwhile, becomes fixated on Gerald’s crimes and the true-crime media circus surrounding them, her curiosity slowly morphing into fear as she suspects Gerald might not be as dead as everyone believes.

What sets “15 Cameras” apart is its willingness to implicate not just its characters, but the audience as well. The film frequently uses the perspective of the spy cameras, making viewers complicit in the act of watching. This meta approach blurs the line between observer and participant, amplifying the film’s sense of unease.

Performances and Direction

Will Madden delivers a compelling performance as Cam, capturing the character’s transformation from an everyday guy to a compulsive voyeur. The film is notably character-driven, with both Madden and Carbone (as Sky) bringing nuance to roles that could have easily become caricatures. While some critics note moments of amateurish acting and the occasional plot contrivance, the cast’s commitment helps ground the film’s more outlandish twists.

Director Danny Madden and writer PJ McCabe inject the film with a grimy, unsettling atmosphere, using minimal effects and clever camerawork to build tension. The choice to set much of the action during the day subverts horror conventions and keeps the audience off-balance.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • The film’s greatest strength is its thematic ambition. It explores the thin line between curiosity and complicity, asking viewers to consider how easily they might cross ethical boundaries when given the chance.
  • The story’s pacing is brisk, though Cam’s rapid descent into voyeurism strains credibility at times.
  • Some plot holes and character decisions may frustrate viewers looking for airtight logic, but the film’s willingness to embrace its own weirdness makes it an entertaining, if flawed, ride.
  • As a trilogy capper, “15 Cameras” brings the franchise full circle, connecting threads from the previous films and offering a natural, if unsettling, conclusion.

Final Thoughts

“15 Cameras” is a low-budget horror surprise: flawed but fascinating, creepy yet oddly funny, and more ambitious than most of its ilk. It’s a film that wants you to squirm-not just at what’s happening on screen, but at your own role as a watcher. If you’re a fan of the series or enjoy horror that doubles as social commentary, this is a worthy (and unsettling) watch.
