Darling is not a normal haunted house horror.
The Story
Darling is about a girl named Darling who took on a job of house sitting a big old mansion located in downtown New York. This is not an ordinary house. It is riddled with unpleasant stories of occult origins and rumors of haunting. She was warned that last house sitter jump off the balcony and committed a suicide. Simply put, the movie is her experience in the house.
The Review (Spoiler Free)
Darling is not a typical horror film. Entire movie is shot in black and white and the movie is almost shot like 1960’s Polanski’s horror film called “Repulsion.”
The story is pretty simple. The movie sets up as a haunted house horror, but when you get down to it, it is something different. I can’t say too much about it without ruining the movie.
Darling is shot as very artsy style movie, meaning it has very minimal dialog, lots of silence moments, strange editing cuts, and lots of scenes where lead character staring in the camera for no reason for long time. I feel like the movie is trying really hard to be artsy instead of trying to tell a story. It does get annoying after while.
Overall, the movie isn’t really scary. There are few scary scenes, but most of the scenes make you wonder what the heck is going on.
The pace of the movie also pretty slow. There are lots of scenes Darling character just stares at the camera for long time. There are many scenes like that where it doesn’t really adds to the story.
Like I mentioned earlier, there is a strange twist in the story but unfortunately the ending is very predictable and some of the big questions are left unanswered.
In the Nutshell
Darling is a haunted house horror with a twist. Darling isn’t terribly bad, but it does get annoying how the film is shot. [3 out of 5 stars]
