Hounded (2022) Movie Review

“Hounded” is a gripping tale of survival that pits a group of South London thieves against the aristocratic predators who view them as nothing more than game to be hunted. Directed by Tommy Boulding, this action-horror-thriller hybrid takes a classic premise and infuses it with a distinctly British flavor that sets it apart from its peers.

The film opens with a seemingly simple burglary that goes awry, leading the group of friends to become unwitting participants in a deadly game of cat and mouse. The stakes are high, and the tension is palpable as they navigate the treacherous landscape of the estate, where every corner turned could lead to their demise.

Samantha Bond delivers a chilling performance as Katherine Redwick, the matriarch of the estate who orchestrates the hunt with a cold and calculating demeanor. Malachi Pullar-Latchman shines as Chaz, the young thief whose only goal was to fund his brother’s education, a motive that adds depth to his character and makes the audience root for his survival.

The film’s cinematography captures the haunting beauty of the countryside, juxtaposing it with the horror unfolding within its bounds. The use of the setting is clever, with the natural environment becoming a character in its own right, full of dangers that are as unfamiliar to the protagonists as they are to the audience.

While “Hounded” may not break new ground in terms of its plot, it stands out through its character development and the performances of a capable young cast. The social commentary on the British class system adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, making it more than just a simple horror flick.

The movie’s pacing is well-executed, with moments of intense action balanced by quieter, more introspective scenes that give the audience a chance to connect with the characters. The sound design is noteworthy as well, creating an atmosphere that is both eerie and immersive.

In the Nutshell

“Hounded” is a solid addition to the British horror genre. It may follow a familiar path, but it does so with enough style and substance to make it a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre. The film’s exploration of class and survival, combined with strong performances and atmospheric direction, make it a movie that both entertains and provokes thought. Whether you’re in it for the thrills or the social critique, “Hounded” is sure to leave an impression. [3 out of 5].
