Hidden (2015) Movie Review with Ending Explained

“Hidden,” directed by the Duffer Brothers, is a film that delves into the depths of suspense and psychological horror. You might recognize The Duffer Brothers from very popular TV show called The Stranger Things. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the narrative follows the lives of a family confined to a bomb shelter for 301 days, hiding from unknown dangers that lurk above. The film stars Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, and Emily Alyn Lind as the family struggling to maintain a semblance of normalcy in the face of an unseen threat. This movie has similar tone with 10 Cloverfield Lane movie.

The movie’s strength lies in its ability to build tension through its claustrophobic setting and the palpable fear of the characters. The directors have skillfully crafted a slow-burning thriller that keeps the audience on edge, with a focus on character development rather than relying on jump scares or gore. The performances are commendable, with Skarsgård and Riseborough delivering a convincing portrayal of parents trying to protect their child, played by the talented Emily Alyn Lind.

One of the most intriguing aspects of “Hidden” is its narrative structure. The film takes its time to unfold, allowing viewers to become invested in the characters’ plight. This slow pace is a double-edged sword; while it contributes to the buildup of suspense, it may deter viewers looking for immediate gratification. However, those who appreciate a well-crafted story will find the finale rewarding and emotionally charged.

The film’s climax is a testament to the screenwriters’ creativity, offering an original twist that redefines the entire storyline. Without revealing too much, the third act of “Hidden” is a clever subversion of expectations, leading to a thought-provoking conclusion that stays with the viewer long after the credits roll.

Despite its merits, “Hidden” is not without its criticisms. Some viewers have found the character of the young girl to be overly talkative, which can be grating given the film’s emphasis on silence for survival. This aspect of the character may challenge the audience’s suspension of disbelief, as one would expect a child to adapt to the rules of quietude in such a high-stakes environment.

In summary, “Hidden” is a film that may polarize audiences with its deliberate pacing and character dynamics. Nonetheless, it stands as a solid entry in the horror genre, offering a fresh take on the post-apocalyptic narrative. The Duffer Brothers have presented a movie that is both intelligent and emotionally resonant, deserving of attention from those who seek depth and originality in their cinematic experiences. The film’s message about the human condition and the lengths to which we go to protect our loved ones is both timely and universal.

For those willing to embrace its slow-burn approach, “Hidden” is a hidden gem that rewards patience with a memorable and thought-provoking experience. It earns a solid 7 out of 10 for its ambition and execution in storytelling.

Spoiler Ending (Spoiler Warning!!)

So, who are the Breathers? The twist at the end reveals that the Breathers are actually the US Army. It turns out there was a virus outbreak that caused some of them to transform into creatures with superhuman strength. Interestingly, these creatures have the ability to control when they transform. This is hinted at throughout the film, such as when the mother teaches her daughter to control her emotions.

In the climax, the soldiers discover them, forcing them to flee. The father had died earlier while trying to protect his wife and daughter. In the end, the mother and daughter survive by transforming into creatures to fend off the soldiers. They then discover there are others in hiding from the soldiers and join them.
