Sting (2024) Horror Movie Review

“Sting,” the latest offering from director Kiah Roache-Turner, weaves a tale of terror that’s as much about family bonds as it is about a monstrous spider on the loose. The film, set against the backdrop of Brooklyn, pits a flesh-eating arachnid against a strained nuclear family, delivering a narrative that’s part creature feature, part domestic drama.

At the heart of “Sting” is Ethan, a multifaceted character played by Ryan Corr, who juggles the roles of a building superintendent, a comic book artist, and a father. His relationship with his daughter Charlotte, portrayed by Alyla Browne, is the emotional core of the movie. Their dynamic reflects the classic Spielbergian theme of a family in crisis, with the added twist of a giant spider from space complicating their already tumultuous lives.

The creature effects, courtesy of Wētā Workshop, are a highlight, bringing the titular spider to life with a level of detail that’s both impressive and terrifying. However, the film’s brisk 91-minute runtime, including credits, seems to have left little room for character development and the animal attack scenes feel rushed, a sentiment echoed by critics.

Despite its shortcomings, “Sting” has its moments of charm. It’s a throwback to the B-movie era, with a mix of cheese and earnestness that could appeal to fans of the genre. The horror elements are strongest when the film focuses on the spider, Sting, lurking in the shadows, delivering some genuinely creepy moments.

In the Nutshell

“Sting” doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does spin a web that captures the essence of a good old-fashioned creature feature. It’s a film that might not linger long in the memory, but it provides enough thrills and heart to make it a worthwhile watch for those who enjoy a blend of horror and heartfelt storytelling.
