Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023) Horror Movie Review

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” (2023) brings the popular video game franchise to the big screen. Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), a night security guard at a seemingly abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, becomes entangled in the dark secrets the animatronic characters hold. Fans of the games will recognize the jump scares, iconic characters, and the overall theme of surviving until dawn.

A Feast of Fan Service:

The film caters heavily to fans of the lore. Locations, easter eggs, and references to the games are sprinkled liberally throughout, creating a sense of familiarity and potentially sparking excitement for those invested in the franchise’s backstory.

Characters Lack Bite:

However, the focus on fan service comes at the expense of character development. Mike and the other human characters feel underdeveloped, offering little in the way of emotional depth or compelling motivations. The actors deliver decent performances, but the script doesn’t give them much to work with.

A Familiar Formula with Predictable Scares:

The narrative relies heavily on jump scares and creepy visuals, elements that are effective at first but become repetitive over time. There’s a sense of predictability to the scares, with the film failing to capitalize on the full potential for psychological horror that the source material offered.

A Lore Dump and an Unsatisfying Conclusion:

The film tries to cram a lot of lore from the games into its runtime, which might feel overwhelming for newcomers and potentially confusing even for established fans. The ending feels rushed and doesn’t offer a fully satisfying resolution to the central mystery.

A Flickering Flame of Frights:

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” has its moments, especially for hardcore fans who will appreciate the visual references and lore connections. However, the underdeveloped characters, predictable scares, and overstuffed plot prevent it from being a truly successful horror film.

The Final Verdict:

If you’re a die-hard FNAF fan, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” might offer a nostalgic thrill. But for casual moviegoers seeking an original and genuinely scary experience, there are better options out there.  4 out of 5 stars.
