The Locals Review (Dead People) (2003)

The Locals is bit older New Zealand horror film, but it is has very original story and twist ending.

The Story

Two best friends, Grant and Paul, hit the road for a weekend of surfing and party.  During the trip, they decided to take a short cut and cut across the private property.  There they met two girls, Lisa and Kelly.  It turned out Lisa and Kelly is not a normal girls and they end up leading them into heartland of evil where they find themselves fighting for their lives

The Review (Spoiler Free)

The Locals didn’t impressed me at first.  The movie feels like cheesy TV show with mediocre acting.  But the movie has very original story and nice surprise twist to the story.  So it is worth your time.  The movie is completely driven by the original story line.

Another complain is the accents of the actors.  New Zealand accents are really hard to understand.  I advise you to turn on the subtitle if you can.

I have to warn you, the movie is not a slasher or any type of serial killer type of movie. There are hardly any special effects and gore. It is more of eerie “Twilight Zone” type of movie.

The movie takes its time to setup the scenario.  At the half way through the movie, you started to realize the characters are not in normal small town.  At that point, you are waiting for the movie to slowly reveal what is happening. I was happy that the surprise twist of the movie is explained well and it is very cleverly written. The ending is very satisfying.

In the Nutshell

The Locals is completely driven by original story and it has nice twist ending. This movie is in Netflix.  So if you have nothing to do on Friday night, check out this movie. I give 4 out of 5 stars.
