Mother! Review (2017) with Spoiler Ending

Be aware, Mother! is not a horror movie.

The Story

The story is about a couple who moved into a restored house which once was burned to the ground by fire.  The husband is once successful poet and the wife is there to support him by restoring the house so he can write again. They are planning to live quiet life, but a couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.

The Review (Spoiler Free)

Don’t be deceived.  Mother is not a horror film.  It is very deceiving how they market the movie as some sort of horror film, but this movie far from horror. It is not even psychological thriller.

Half way through the movie, you start to realize that this is some sort of symbolic movie. It is one of those movie that you shouldn’t take it literally.  If you take the movie literally, it wouldn’t make any sense to you. The lead characters are not even given a name.  The husband is referred as Him and the wife is referred as Mother which tells me that they are some sort of symbolic beings.

Be aware that there is very disturbing scene at the end of the movie which involve new born baby.  Even though you are not supposed to take this movie literally, it is still very disturbing.

The actings are top notch.  Many big name actors are in the movie including Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer.  However, when I saw Kristen Wiig in the movie, I was bit surprised.  She felt out of place.

If you are not into artsy and symbolic movie, you’ll probably hate this movie.  As for me, I was very disappointed that it isn’t a horror movie and when I found out the movie is some sort of symbolic movie, I was even more disappointed.  But I sat through the entire movie because it was different. Considering it is some sort of artsy movie, the pacing of the movie is prett good.  Things are happening very fast and it is almost like riding a rollercoaster. The symbolic aspect of the movie is not completely ambiguous, and I wanted to see how they end the movie.  Surprisingly, I wasn’t disappointed by the ending.

Spoiler Ending (Spoiler Alert)

It is very obvious that there are many biblical reference in the movie.  The bible reference is far from accurate, but makes the movie intriguing.

First of all, it is pretty clear that the husband is God and the wife is Mother Nature hence the title of the movie.  The movie is from the perspective of Mother Nature. Mother Nature loves God very much, but she is getting frustrated that God loves men more.  Mother Nature is intimately connected to the house.  I believe the house represent the earth or nature itself.

Biblical reference is very clear when we are introduced to the first guest.  The first guest played by Ed Harris is first human, Adam.  It is obvious that the guest’s wife is Eve.  We see that God loves Adam very much.  Adam also respects God.  When Adam was throwing up in the toiler, we see a scar in his rib. The scar is reference to where Eve came from.  According to Bible, Eve is made from Adam’s rib.

Adam’s two sons’ are Cain and Able.  They hate each other and eventually Cain kills Abel and wondered into the woods.

Eve loves Adam, but she is very cunning and deceitful. God’s office represent forbidden tree. Eve was warned not to go in there, but she goes in there anyway and broke God’s precious stone which represent Adam and Eve eating forbidden fruit.  Eventually God is disappointed and kick them out of the house, just like how Adam and Eve was kicked out of Garden.

But soon Adam and his large family members barged into the house again and start destroying the house.  They eventually broke the pipe and water fills the house.  God kick them out again.  This represents the flood.

Eventually, God finishes his new poetry.  This is New Testament.  Everybody start to celebrate and worship his poetry by barging into the house again.

Soon we see the Mother giving birth to a son. The son represents Jesus.  I am not sure how Mother Nature is involve in birth of Jesus but like I said before, this isn’t the most accurate account of biblical story.  People love Jesus, but quickly they killed him. After they killed him, they ate him which represent the communion.  If you remember, communion is symbolic gesture of eating Jesus’ body.

Soon, all hell break loose in the house.  Eventually the mother snaps and she decided to destroys the whole house by ignite on fire.  We see that there is secret basement where all the oils are stored.  This represent all the oil and minerals hidden under the earth.

At the end, everyone dies and the mother is badly injured.  Obviously, nothing can hurt God.  There isn’t even scratch on God.  The Mother eventually dies and gives God her heart.  Her heart turns into sacred crystal that we see in the beginning of the movie.  We see at the end that the Mother Nature is expendable.  God is able to recreate Mother Nature and eventually new house.  We see new Mother Nature but she is not Jennifer Larence. She is different person.  It starts all over again.

I am not really sure what the moral of the story is but what I got from the movie is that God loves human so much that He is willing to sacrifices the Mother Nature and earth and let human destroy the earth.  Because, at the end, He can always create it again and start over again.

In the Nutshell

Mother is not a horror movie!  It is artsy symbolic movie.  If you are not into this type of movie, you’ll probably hate it.  But if you are open minded, give it a try. I give 3 out of 5 stars.
