The Review (Spoiler Warning)

It’s quite hard to categorize this movie, as it tries to be many different genres, starting from a supernatural horror, then a crime-thriller, then a drama.  It’s quite the mixed bag there and while it does work at times, there are other times where it feels like the movie overwhelmed itself.  Although, the movie still works without the horror elements, but with the horror elements, the movie takes on bit of odd turn towards the end.

The movie does starts bit slow.  It takes time to introduce the William character and his daughter.  Also we are introduced the horror elements in the beginning when the duaghter starts to talk to the dead.  Once we are introduced to the woman who turned out to be not dead, the story starts to pickup.  One thing for sure, the movie doesn’t lack suspence and thriller towards the end of the movie.

Overall, acting is great. Ava Preston who plays Gloria steals every scene she’s in. She casually hits all the required drama, comedy and horror beats with the ease. She lights up the screen every time she’s on camera.  Another surprising standout is Ari Millen who plays one of the major antagonists.  He’s the sort of villain you love to hate and nails every scene with ease.  Divine and Preston are excellent together, forming a very believable father-daughter relationship even under these horrific and unimaginable circumstances.  Also in the mix is Jackie played by Jess Salgueiro, a woman thrown into this family unit by accident, forging a strange but real bond with Gloria.

Unfortunately, the ending is very predictable.  There was nothing surprise about how the movie is going to end.  But even though you know exactly how the movie is going to play out, it is still very entertaining to sit through the movie until the end.

That being said, not everyone is going to like this movie.  But this was a solid movie and a gutsy move by the filmmaker to move outside their comfort zone and try something new.  I’ll Take Your Dead is frighteningly raw and takes a long hard look at human suffering and how that can skewer your perspective on almost everything, including your relationship with the people that you care about above all others.

Ending Explained (Spoiler Warning!)

The ending of the movie isn’t very difficult to figure it out.

In the opening scene, we see some criminals dropped few bodies off to a mysterious man who calls himself “Candy Butcher”.  He supposed to make the body disappear.  He lives with a daughter named Gloria who is also very used to his unconventional life style of “Candy Butcher”.

As the movie progress, we start to get to know this man who calls himself Candy Butcher.  It turned out that he is good man and he didn’t want to be in this life style.  He knows that this isn’t good for his daughter.  So he is saving money so he can eventually disappear with his daughter to live a normal life.

But his plan starts to get complicated when a woman named Jackie dropped into his life.  She supposed to be dead but some how she survived, and now Candy Butch has to decide what to do with her.

Meanwhile, we see that the daughter sees dead people in the house and talking to them every night.  It appears that the daughter is the only one who can see these ghosts.  These ghosts appear to be the spirits from the body that brought into the house in the past.  At this point, we don’t know for sure if she is imagining it or actually sees the dead people.  Obviously Candy Butcher thinks that she is seeing things and one more reason for him to quickly get out of the house.

While Candy Butcher is trying to figure out what to do with Jackie, he treated her wounds and tide her to the bed.  Jackie is now trying to figure out the way to escape.  But at the same time, Gloria and Jackie started to get close and bound with each other.

Final climax of the movie starts when Jackie was able to got hold of her phone to call her boyfriend to pick her up not knowing that her boyfriend was the one who tried to kill her.  That’s when the group of gangers came back to the house to kill Jackie again.  So at the end, Candy Butcher had to decide.  Let the gangers kill Jackie and move on with his life with his daughter.  Or try to save Jackie and risk everything he has work for.  At first, he decided to give up Jackie to the gangers but later on he changed his mind as he figured out that he and Gloria’s life was in danger no matter what he does.  So he decided to fight.

It is obvious that the gangster has more fire power and out number them.  That is when the ghosts of the house came out to the rescue.  The ghosts ended up killing these gangers one at a time.  But it came with a cost.  Candy Butcher didn’t able to make it, but Jackie and Gloria was able to came out alive.  At the end, Jackie and Gloria left the house to start a new life together, meanwhile Candy Butch is now the ghost of the farm along with other ghosts.
