Eloise (2017) Horror Movie Review

“Eloise” (2017) emerges as a psychological thriller that delves into the harrowing confines of an abandoned insane asylum. The film, directed by Robert Legato, attempts to weave a narrative around four friends who venture into the dilapidated Eloise in search of a death certificate that promises a substantial inheritance for Jacob, one of the protagonists. The setting of Eloise, with its dark history and eerie atmosphere, is ripe for a gripping horror tale. However, the movie struggles to fully capitalize on its potential.

The plot ambitiously tries to distinguish itself from the conventional “haunted asylum” trope by intertwining the characters’ personal histories with the asylum’s own disturbing past. Yet, the execution falls short, with flashbacks that feel more suited to a television drama than a feature film. The performances, particularly from Eliza Dushku and Chace Crawford, are criticized for lacking depth, rendering their character’s revelations less impactful.

Despite its shortcomings, “Eloise” does manage to deliver a handful of scares and maintains a level of entertainment throughout its runtime. The film’s visual effects, a nod to Legato’s extensive experience in the field, contribute to the few moments of tension and fear that punctuate the narrative.

“Eloise” is a film that had the ingredients for a compelling horror experience but ultimately fails to deliver a memorable or innovative addition to the genre. It stands as a testament to the challenges of crafting a horror story that can truly captivate and terrify its audience. Eloise is not going to blow you away but it isn’t bad either.  So go check it out! I give 3 out 5 stars.
